YouTube Changes How It Counts Views, Handing Marketers Two Numbers Instead Of One
Forbes
YouTube is updating how it measures video performance, introducing two distinct metrics for marketers and creators. From the 24th of August, a public view will be counted from the moment a video begins playing across long-form videos, podcasts and live streams, aligning YouTube’s methodology more closely with platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. At the same time, a separate “engaged views” metric will remain available in analytics to measure audiences who continue watching beyond the opening moments.
The change highlights the growing importance of looking beyond headline reach metrics and placing greater emphasis on engagement quality. While public view counts are likely to increase, marketers will need to distinguish between exposure and meaningful attention when evaluating campaign performance, reporting results and comparing effectiveness across channels.
