In the Age of Individuality, Gen Z Still Longs for a Uniform

High Snobiety

The article explores a seeming contradiction at the heart of Gen Z’s relationship with fashion: even as this generation is obsessed with individuality and hyper-specific personal style, many young people are also gravitating toward “uniform” dressing that simplifies daily decisions and signals belonging. It opens with examples of Gen Z workers who have settled into reliable outfit formulas at the office — the same tank, jeans and shrug, or a go-to shirt and sneakers.

The piece argues that a uniform state of mind is re-emerging because the boundaries of what’s appropriate (especially at work) have blurred after years of remote work and shifting dress codes, leaving young people anxious about how to present themselves. At the same time, Gen Z’s immersion in online culture has created immense pressure to express identity through outfits, with viral trends, outfit-tracking apps and algorithmically spread aesthetics encouraging everyone to adopt the same formulas.
